Blinking stop signs make traffic stops easy for drivers to spot
ASCENSION – Newly installed stop signs, equipped with flashing red lights, are hard to miss at four-way-stops in Ascension Parish.
Lawmakers say the idea is to make the roads safer by lighting up stop signs. that otherwise. would have been hard to spot. Ascension Parish President, Kenny Matassa, said they installed eight blinking signs, and have two more portable units on hand. It was made possible with a $40,000 grant from the state. Now they are focusing on the roads, that would most benefit from the blinking signs.
Drivers we spoke to like Jerrard St. Amant, were on board.
"I think it's more of a safety precaution because sometimes i mean there are a lot of four way stops and sometimes people just run a stop sign because they are not able to see them and the lights make it very much more visible," St. Amant said.
There is no need to worry about a malfunction, because once the signs are installed they will run on solar power. That means the Sun will keep the batteries charged, and the parish won't need to worry about changing batteries or any other type of maintenance.
Drivers like Qunizy Jones and Kylee Allee say they have noticed a difference.
"You can see it, you can see the lights and that lets you know that you are gonna have to stop. Its the same thing as a red light or a green light, you see the lights and you know something is happening," Kylee Allee explained.
"If anything, they get your attention enough to notice they are there, because they are still there in front of you and not something off to the side," Qunizy Jones said.
President Matassa thinks they are an immediate fix for traffic collisions.
"I think every community that is having problems with people stopping at the signs should look at them because they do work." Matassa said.
