Churchgoers hold car wash to raise donations for Harvey victims
BATON ROUGE - People spent their day off helping to raise money and gather items for Texas victims of Hurricane Harvey. One group of eighth graders, their friends and siblings spent Monday washing cars for free and collecting donations.
The group stationed at Jefferson Baptist Church set up stations for cars to come get their vehicles washed and scrubbed as the group makes a difference geared with just soap suds, sponges and water hoses.
“I thought it would be good to help the community and we had the same thing last year and they helped us,” 11-year-old volunteer Holden Martin said.
The kids and their parents, said they know what everyone affected is going through from experience.
“Anybody in Louisiana kind of feels what they're feeling over there," mom and volunteer Suzette Martin said. "We know what it was like last year with the flood. Luckily we didn't flood but we were able to help last year, and we know what an impact it made on the families that we were able to help."
The volunteers washed nearly 100 cars Monday and raised about $2,000. The money collected will go directly to Bayou City Fellowship in Houston, Texas.
Sam Fisicaro, the mom who organized the fundraiser, came up with the idea after talking to her kids who wanted to help in some way.
“We're just now kind of picking up the pieces, right? Then, this happens in Texas, and I have three kids, and there's a ton of kids around all the time ... they want to help and we want to show them they have the power to help,” Fisicaro said.
After the hard work displayed Monday, the moms said they saw how powerful giving back is for the kids and themselves.
“You know, we just are helping the kids share the love of Christ, and showing them that they can absolutely can, and do, have the power to do that,” said Fisicaro.
But they weren't the only ones spending labor day helping Harvey victims.
The District Attorney’s Office in Baton Rouge worked as well, collecting boxes of 'gutting' supplies for the families on the road to recovery.
