More than 400,000 sign petition calling for Rams-Saints rematch
NEW ORLEANS - Saints fans are still reeling from the heartbreaking conclusion to Sunday's NFC Championship game, and some aren't quite ready to let it go.
The Saints suffered their first postseason loss in the Superdome since Sean Payton took over as head coach in 2006 in a nailbiting 26-23 overtime instant-classic. But the game will forever have an asterisk alongside the final score for Saints fans and countless football enthusiasts nationwide.
The now-infamous pass interference that went uncalled not only cost the Saints a potential NFC title but a shot at a second Super Bowl for Drew Brees and Louisiana's most beloved sports franchise.
"They blew the call," Coach Payton said after a phone conversation with league officials. "They said not only was it interference, it was helmet-to-helmet... They couldn't believe it."
Despite the NFL's admittance of the egregious no-call, there was seemingly nothing that could be done about the outcome of the game.
But that didn't stop ruffled Saints fans, who have already created an online petition demanding a rematch of the game. In less than 24 hours, the petition has reached nearly 400,000 digital signatures and continues to gain momentum.
And while the chance of actually getting a rematch is practically non-existent for a number of reasons, there is reportedly a section of the NFL rules which would theoretically allow for such a thing.
"The Commissioner has the sole authority to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary and/or corrective measures if any club action, non-participant interference, or calamity occurs in an NFL game which the Commissioner deems so extraordinarily unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of the game," reads Rule 17, Section 2, Article 1 of the NFL rules.
While it's hard to imagine NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell evoking such a little-known rule, fans can keep on hoping for some sort of accountability from the league.
