Deputies: Toddler accidentally shot himself while left alone with gun, supervising adult arrested
BATON ROUGE - Deputies with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office have arrested a 26-year-old man who they say left a three-year-old alone with a gun, which resulted in the toddler accidentally shooting himself.
According to an arrest report, the incident occurred Wednesday evening, around 4:30 p.m., in the area of Kilona Drive when a man identified as Jacoby Joseph forgot that one of his friends had left an assault style gun in his vehicle, which was parked in the home's driveway.
Deputies go on to say that Joseph, still not recalling that a dangerous firearm was on the floor of his vehicle, placed a toddler in his vehicle and then momentarily stepped away, leaving the child alone in the vehicle for about ten seconds.
Joseph told authorities in the brief moment that he stepped away, he heard a gunshot and raced back to the vehicle where he found the three-year-old injured.
Joseph said he then jumped into action, rendering aid to the child by applying pressure to the wound until emergency personnel arrived.
As detectives investigated the incident, Joseph agreed to answer all of their questions, waiving his Miranda Rights.
He was arrested on one charge of second-degree cruelty to juveniles and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
The three-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
