Bond set at $15k for teen accused of shooting, killing 6-year-old
BATON ROUGE - Bond has been set for a 13-year-old accused of shooting another child in the head last week.
On Monday, a judge saddled Jesavrie Bell with a $15,000 bond. He's charged with second-degree murder and illegal possession of a weapon in the death of 6-year-old Jahiem Holliday.
"Right now because of the person's age, there is no mandatory minimum or mandatory time that the court has to give assuming that the person would be found responsible," District Attorney Hillar Moore said.
The shooting was first reported around 4:45 p.m. Friday on Madison Avenue near N 17th Street. According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Holliday was found dead behind a house.
In court Monday, detectives testified that a group of five juveniles were at the house when the shooting happened. The detectives said the children were playing basketball when they allegedly decided to film a rap video featuring a fake robbery.
Bell reportedly retrieved his uncle's 9mm handgun from the house and met back with the other juveniles. Officers said he then accidentally shot Holliday in the head while cocking the weapon.
The testimony went on to say Bell returned the weapon to the house and made up a story about a masked man firing a gun, but he later confessed to accidentally shooting the boy.
Residents say the home was a common place for children in the neighborhood to gather and play.
"We have a family mourning. We have a mother out here mourning the loss of her baby. We are asking the community to keep the family in their prayers," Police Chief Murphy Paul said Friday.
Bell is scheduled to be arraigned in court on November 13.
