Six California girls fighting to join Cub Scouts
SANTA ROSA – They call themselves “the unicorns,” and they want to be Cub Scouts.
Six California girls are fighting after they were told by the Boy Scouts of America that they can not join the local boy scout council in Santa Rosa because it is “inappropriate.”
According to an ABC News report, 10-year-old Ella Jacobs tried being a girl scout, but didn’t enjoy it. She would rather tag along with her brother to cub scout events.
The girl’s mother, Danelle Jacobs wanted to find a “better fit” for her daughter.
So she founded a co-ed program, “Learning for Life,” that allowed the girls to participate with the boys.
“The girls were approved to go to all age appropriate events just like they were in the Cub Scouts,” Jacobs told ABC News. “They were earning different patches but were doing the same things and so that was great.”
The fun ended one month ago after one parent complained. After a meeting on Oct 1, the six girls were told they could no longer participate with the boys.
“They said things like it was completely inappropriate and girls would take over all the leadership positions,” Jacobs said. “What would be inappropriate is lost on me.”
In a statement to ABC News, the Boy Scouts of America said that the national organization was made aware that the Santa Rosa unit was not following eligibility requirements.
“We understand that the values and the lessons of Scouting are attractive to the entire family,” the Boy Scouts of America said. “However, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are year-round programs for boys and young men in the first grade through age 18.”
The Unicorns plan to attend a local Scout Council meeting Friday to hand in applications to be apart of the Cub Scouts.
