NEW ORLEANS - The sinkhole that caused a major disruption at an I-10 exit ramp was repaired Saturday, about a day ahead of schedule.

DOTD officials told WWL-TV that the Metairie Road - City Park exit has been reopened to traffic following the repairs. The sinkhole appeared suddenly during heavy rainfall Thursday night.

"The sinkhole was discovered by a motorist around 10:45 last night," Chris Welty with the DOTD said Friday.

Motor Assist crews quickly put up cones and barricades to secure the area Thursday night.

Crews began working to make emergency repairs to the damage concrete drainage structure that caused the road to collapse. After that was complete, they backfilled the hole and patched the roadway.
