BATON ROUGE - A man from Port Allen died Monday morning when he got out of the car he was riding in to check on the straps used to tow a car behind him.
State Police said Delvonte Wiley, 22, and Timothy Bird, 53, were towing an SUV with a truck when they stopped in the turning lane near the intersection of Florida and Airline in Baton Rouge to make sure the straps were secure.
That's when another car, driven by Chauntell Barnett, 33, attempted to swerve to miss the vehicles, but clipped the SUV, which hit Bird, who was outside of the truck. Bird was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Wiley was ticketed for Simple Obstruction of a Highway of Commerce after the accident, which is still under investigation.
State Police do not think impairment was a factor.
