LHSAA adjusts sanctions on Southern Lab football team
BATON ROUGE - Former Southern Lab Head football coach Marcus Randall attended an LHSAA hearing to find out the fate of his career at Southern Lab.
"My client is an innocent man, who was vilified on television by this organization and a public body in the state of Louisiana and given zero opportunity to clear his name..it's a shame," Randall's attorney Jill Craft said.
LHSAA suspended Randall after a Southern Lab investigation revealed a number of alleged recruiting violations. The Kittens championship teams of 2015 and 2016 were stripped of their championship football titles. Randall said the accusations are unfair and have tarnished his career.
"And at this point, all we really basically came here to do is to vindicate my name and like Jill said I wasn't given this opportunity til this day," Randall said.
During the LHSAA Executive session, Randall did not get the opportunity to speak and only Southern Lab was able to appeal their penalties from a month ago.
The executive session agreed to change the post-season ban from two years to one. Also, two ineligible Southern Lab players were ruled able to play, but the fines totaling to $17,000 were upheld.
"The good news is at this particular point we have athletes back which are participating, I support that decision and now we just have to move forward," Executive Director of the LHSAA Eddie Bonine said.
Randall still faces a one year suspension from the LHSAA, and the reasoning behind the dismissal and suspension are still unclear.
"We know there's something about illegal recruiting and the only way we know that is because LHSAA got on television and said it. And then they're going to back away from as if they're ashamed of what they accused this man of? And Southern University Lab School is going to back away from it all of a sudden, as if their ashamed of what they accused him of? Give us the report at least give us a chance lets us see what's being said," Craft said.
