BRPD: 2 arrested for fighting officers at Spanish Town parade
BATON ROUGE - Police say a pair of intoxicated men were arrested Saturday after a struggle broke out involving an officer while the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade was rolling.
According to Baton Rouge Police, an officer was flagged down by several parade goers who said they saw 20-year-old Robert Schmolke punch a car windshield, causing it to crack.
Police say other parade goers detained Schmolke in a nearby parking lot.
When officers made contact with Schmolke, officers say he appeared very intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. The officer then placed him under arrest, but the man said he'd been handcuffed too tightly.
The officer said that when he tried to loosen the handcuffs, Schmolke tried to swing his arms and began fighting the officer. At the same time, BRPD says one of Schmolke’s friends, 19-year-old Nicholas Anthony Marino, tried to grab the officer.
Police say Schmolke ignored multiple commands to stop fighting, was taken to the ground and then cuffed.
