Police break up massive brawl involving parents, students at McKinley High

BATON ROUGE - Police officers swarmed a high school Wednesday afternoon after a large fight broke out involving both students and parents on campus.

Police said the "melee" erupted at McKinley High School around 2:30 p.m. as school was letting out for the day. More than a dozen police vehicles responded to the scene.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said the fight involved a "large group" of students and parents. An officer called for assistance when the situation did not de-escalate, prompting the large response, a BRPD spokesperson said.

The confrontation reportedly stemmed from an earlier incident involving two students during school hours. Police said those students' parents were called to the school and another fight erupted as school let out.

A man was briefly detained but no arrests have been made at this time. Police said they expect to file charges once they determine who was responsible.

The school system released the following statement Wednesday evening.

Earlier today, an altercation took place between two students at McKinley High School and was resolved promptly. Unfortunately, students not involved with this matter contacted parents to make them aware and additional adults responded by arriving on campus. Upon their arrival, several of the adults engaged in a fight. During the course of this event, multiple students also joined in the altercation.

The School Resource Officer was on-site and requested additional law enforcement support to safely resolve and address the situation at that time.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance. Moving forward, there will be additional law enforcement at McKinley Senior High School over the course of the next few days, or for however long is necessary, in order to protect our students and staff,” stated Director of Security, Robert McGarner Jr.

EBRPSS will continue to offer full support to our law enforcement partners who continue to investigate the situation. All students will be disciplined according to the student rights and responsibilities handbook. EBRPSS was informed that one person was transported to a local hospital by EMS to seek further medical attention.
