BATON ROUGE- Emergency crews worked a early morning fire on Capital Heights Avenue.

The call came in shortly before 6:30 a.m. for a house fire in the 4000 block of Capital Heights. The fire was under control at 6:45.

At the scene, firefighters found the fire burning through the roof of the home. Luckily, crews were able to contain the blaze before it could spread to surrounding homes.

Witnesses said part of the roof had collapsed due to the fire.

Authorities said no one was home at the time of the fire, but firefighters did discover a dead dog in the smoldering home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and foul play is not suspected.

At one point the fire closed Capital Heights Avenue at Richland Avenue.
