Suspect killed in firefight with Jefferson Parish deputies

NEW ORLEANS - Sheriff's investigators said deputies shot and killed a suspect who opened fire on them after leading authorities on a chase through the west bank of Jefferson Parish.

According to WWL-TV, JPSO spokesman John Fortunato said deputies shot and killed 25-year-old Desmond Willis of New Orleans in a fast food parking lot on Manhattan Boulevard after he fired several shots at them.

Fortunato said deputies pulled the truck over that Willis was driving over and smelled a strong odor of marijuana. The deputies asked Willis to turn off his vehicle, but said he sped off and crashed a short time later.

Deputies said Willis fled on foot, firing a gun at deputies as he ran. Deputies said when he got to another parking lot he dropped into a firing stance and pointed his weapon back at deputies, then fired again. Deputies returned fire according to Fortunato, hitting Willis several times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A bystander in the area posted a video on Twitter which had what sounded like dozens of gunshots going off.

Deputies said Willis was armed with a Glock 9mm pistol, and a second handgun was found in his pocket.
