Shivering man rescued from near-freezing water

ZACHARY - A man was rescued from near-freezing temperatures by Zachary Firefighters after he ran his car off Groom road and into a pond.

It happened just before midnight at the intersection of Groom Rd. and Old Scenic Hwy.

Mona Gates was inside her home nearby when she heard the crash.

"I heard this big thunk, and the whole house just shook, the windows rattled, and I ran out and I saw the headlights, I could tell he was in the pond," said Gates.

Gates called for help and Zachary Firefighters showed up to save the stranded man.

"We got there, we found a man standing on the car, on the roof of the car, with water about up to his knee, you could see the lights of the vehicle under the water," said Michael LeJeune, a volunteer Firefighter.

The firefighters used a small boat to retrieve the man and Sheriff's deputies pulled the car out of the pond later.

Deputies say they don't suspect the man was drinking.
