Pedestrian struck by car on Greenwell Springs Road

BATON ROUGE - A driver was allegedly high on opioids when he slammed his car into someone and then had to be revived with Narcan so officers could take him into custody after the wreck.
The crash happened Friday morning near a storage facility on Greenwell Springs, as the victim was unloading vehicles off of a car hauler. The Baton Rouge Police Department did not release the identity of the victim but noted that they had broken ribs and was at risk of losing their legs.
Richard Scholtens, 34, was arrested less than an hour later for the crash. His vehicle had stopped in the middle of the roadway and he was unconscious, not breathing, and "lifeless" after an apparent overdose on an opiate, according to deputies.
First responders were able to revive Scholtens before bringing him to a hospital and arresting him. Police noted he had a history of drug arrests and at least two DWI arrests dating back to 2010.
Scholtens was booked for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, reckless operations, hit and run, and operating a vehicle without a license.
