Ballistics results return in The Cottages shooting
BATON ROUGE – Police have received preliminary results on ballistics tests on bullets taken from victims in a triple shooting where two Southern University students died almost two weeks ago.
LaShuntae Benton and Annette January were shot and killed in crossfire between two suspected shooters at the Cottages apartment complex off Burbank: Ernest Felton and Brandon Henderson. Police have said Felton and Henderson were exchanging gunfire when the girls were hit. Henderson was also shot and survived. He was treated at a hospital and released.
Only Felton has been charged with the shooting and was arrested in connection with Henderson's shooting injuries. No one has been charged with the deaths of the women, yet.
In a response to a question by WBRZ about the status of ballistics tests, a police spokesperson said Wednesday preliminary results were returned but could not discuss them. The investigation continues, police said.
Benton, of Lake Charles, was a student athletic trainer at Southern. January, of the Chicago area, was a member of the university's track team.
Felton was recruited to play football at Southern University a few years ago but most recently was a part-time student.
Little is known about Henderson's background.
