Plaintiffs' Attorney: Town of White Castle loses court battle over public records
PLAQUEMINE- Attorneys representing plaintiffs suing the Town of White Castle say the Town was dealt a big blow today, by an Iberville Parish Judge. Attorney Seth Dornier said a Judge ordered the Town to turn over the public records, pay the plaintiffs' attorney fees, and face a fine.
Attorneys defending the town said in court, everything has been turned over. However, today, Judge Batiste ordered Town Leaders to go back to Town Hall this afternoon to find information pertaining to the case.
"No comment," is what Mayor Jermarr Williams said as he exited the courthouse.
His attorney, Valencia Landry also had nothing to say about it.
"Since this started in August of 2015, there has been no document produced either to the court or counsel, to myself or co-counsel," Plaintiff's attorney Charlotte McGeHee said.
McGeHee and Attorney Seth Dornier are representing town residents, Garnell Young and June Landry. Both residents claim they have filed numerous public records requests since last year and are getting the run around from town leaders.
"In a large part, the town of White Castle is operating without policy and procedure to comply with law...they don't seem to have it," Dornier said.
That was evident when Mayor Williams told a judge he instructed people not to film town meetings, even though recording devices weren't working.
Once Hamilton came back to court with the box of papers, attorneys still argued it out about not being able to find the records they were looking for. The Mayor and his attorneys contend they've done everything to comply with the citizens' requests.
