CAMP MINDEN - The Louisiana National Guard says its final big burn of dangerously unstable nitrocellulose was a success.

It says a bunker holding 42.5 tons of nitrocellulose and 20 tons of potentially explosive artillery propellant was ignited at noon Tuesday at Camp Minden. Nitrocellulose is also called "clean-burning igniter."

If any remains, it will be burned Wednesday along with six 32-pound boxes of nitrocellulose that escaped when 57 tons of the compound were burned Saturday.

The remotely ignited burns were an emergency procedure to destroy nitrocellulose remaining after a bunker holding 60 tons of the compound exploded on its own Sept. 29.
