Kenner woman wounded by New Year's gunfire
KENNER - Kenner police say man firing a gun to celebrate the new year wounded a 40-year-old woman in the abdomen.
Lt. Brian McGregor said in a news release that 26-year-old Brandon Smith was booked with aggravated battery, negligent injury and illegal discharge of a firearm.
McGregor says Smith was firing a gun toward an empty lot in celebration of New Year's early Friday morning when one round ricocheted off a metal pole and a struck the woman who was get out of a car.
The unidentified woman was taken to a New Orleans hospital, where she was treated and released.
McGregor say police obtained a search warrant and found the handgun inside a vent in Smith's apartment.
Online jail records do not list an attorney for Smith.
