BATON ROUGE - Family members say a private funeral has been set for East Baton Rouge Councilman Buddy Amoroso.

Amoroso's wife told WBRZ Monday that the councilman's body is being escorted to a funeral home later this afternoon. While his family has arranged for a private ceremony, they say the public will have a chance to pay their respects sometime next week. Residents are also encouraged to share their personal stories of the councilman at rememberingbuddyamoroso.com.

Sunday was a full day of remembering Councilman Amoroso after he died in a bicycling accident in St. Francisville Saturday.

“I got the news and I was devastated, seeing how much support and how many people loved him really makes my heart happy,” said Buddy’s son, Joey Amoroso.

Joey, his mom, and other family members were among dozens of bicyclists honoring the recent loss.

“You people have no idea what this means to us,” said Denise Amoroso, Buddy’s wife, addressing the crowd. “I keep joking to people I didn’t know I was married to a rock star.”

The organized bike ride let everyone enjoy what Buddy enjoyed to do.

“It's a grief we all share, and in Baton Rouge there's a very strong sense of community among bike riders,” said Larry Reily, who frequently rode alongside Buddy.

That grief was also felt earlier in the day at Christ Presbyterian Church. Buddy was a Deacon there for almost 30 years.

“It’s a hard thing because Buddy was so loved here,” said Pastor Galen Sorey. “He truly did love the Lord with all of his heart.”

Two passions brought two gatherings together in Baton Rouge to remember a man who gave everything to his community.

“He took care of everybody, and he took care of me,” said Denise. “I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

Public visitations will be held at Resthaven funeral home on Jefferson Highway Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
