BATON ROUGE – A jury has found a father accused of beating his son to death in 2014 guilty of second-degree murder.

Vernell Day was accused of beating his son, Jay’v’une Isaiah Bergin, so badly that the child had to be hospitalized. The child later died in the hospital due to his injuries.

In 2014, the child’s grandmother told WBRZ that her daughter, who lost custody of her two children, had warned an uncaring child welfare department about placing them with Day.
