Baldwin, Franklin approve 1-cent sales taxes to benefit public safety services
FRANKLIN – The communities of Baldwin and Franklin approved new one-cent sales taxes with proceeds directed to public safety issues.
Franklin voters on Saturday approved a tax that would bring in $1.3 million a year for the city fire and police departments. In Baldwin, the tax is expected to bring in $180,000 that would be earmarked for public safety.
Neither sales tax has an expiration date. Removing the tax would take another vote of the people.
The sheriff’s department asked voters to renew a 10-mill property tax that brings in $288,000 a year for one of its subdistricts — the issues passed by a better than 5-1 margin — and three public school districts each won approval of property tax renewals that will each bring in more than $2 million annually.
