47-year-old Mississippi resident killed in fiery Scenic Highway crash
BATON ROUGE - Authorities are responding to a deadly crash in east Baton Rouge Friday evening.
The crash was reported around 5:30 p.m. on U.S. 61 near Old Scenic Highway and took the life of 47-year-old Calvin Johnson of Woodville, Mississippi, Louisiana State Police say.
According to authorities, an initial investigation revealed the crash occurred as Johnson was traveling northbound on US Hwy 61.
At the same time, a 2020 Cascadia tractor trailer was traveling southbound on US Hwy 61 and for reasons still under investigation, Johnson exited the left side of the roadway and hit an embankment.
After colliding with the embankment, Johnson’s vehicle reportedly went airborne and entered the southbound lanes of travel on US Hwy 61.
While still airborne, Johnson’s vehicle struck the Cascadia.
Police say that Johnson, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.
The driver of the Cascadia was wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries.
Police say the tragic crash remains under investigation.
