Southern Lab repeats at Division IV champions

NEW ORLEANS - Defending their state championship from a season ago, the Southern Lab Kittens have defeated Ascension Episcopal 36-9 to capture the 2016 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division IV title.
The Kittens (12-1) got on the scoreboard in the first quarter Friday when Shannon Forman sacked Ascension Episcopal (13-1) quarterback Jake Vascocu in the end zone for a safety.
After receiving the free kick, Tyrion Davis made it 8-0 Kittens when he scored on a 52-yard touchdown run. It was the first of three long touchdown runs for the sophomore tailback, who also scored on a 57-yard run later in the first quarter and an 85-yard run in the fourth.
The Blue Gators got on the scoreboard when Taylor Doss hit a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 16-3.
Southern Lab pushed its lead to 22-3 on its first play from scrimmage in the third quarter on an 80-yard touchdown run by Charvis Thorton.
Junior quarterback Quincy Fillmore's 7-yard touchdown run and subsequent two-point conversion pass extended the Kittens' lead to 30-3.
The state championship win was the sixth title for the Kittens, while Ascension Episcopal was making its first-ever appearance in the game held at the Mercedes Benz Superdome.
