La'el Collins signs with Cowboys

BATON ROUGE - Former LSU lineman La'el Collins will play for the Dallas Cowboys, successfully landing with an NFL team after his draft prospects went off the rails.

The Cowboys organization confirmed the news, which ESPN reported will net Collins $1.6 million guaranteed over three years.

Several teams heavily courted Collins in the days after the draft, including the Bills and Dolphins who flew into Baton Rouge to meet with the NFL prospect. Sources also told News 2 that Collins and his mother met last night with team owner Jerry Jones and others from the organization in Dallas before signing the deal.

Collins' draft prospects went awry after reports that police wanted to talk to him about his past relationship to a woman killed in Baton Rouge. Collins met with police and underwent a paternity test for the woman's child, who was also killed. Even though police repeatedly said he was not a suspect, Collins went undrafted.
