DONALDSONVILLE - An alleged armed robber spent hours in a standoff with local law enforcement on the Sunshine Bridge before surrendering to deputies Thursday evening.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office says the Darrin Miller, 25, was involved in an armed robbery at a Beauty Town store in Donaldsonville around noon. The knife-wielding man allegedly robbed the store clerk, punched that person in the face and fled.

The man was at a stalemate with Ascension and St. James sheriff's deputies on the bridge starting around 1:30 p.m. The standoff shut down the bridge for nearly four hours as Miller threatened to leap to his death. The bridge has since reopened.

Miller was taken into custody around 5 o'clock and brought to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

He will be booked on charges of armed robbery and attempted first-degree murder, according to the sheriff's office.
