PLAQUEMINE - On Saturday morning, residents in the Island neighborhood in Plaquemine woke to flyers littering their yards. These flyers were for a white supremacist group called White Lives Matter Louisiana. Plaquemine Chief of Police Stephen Engolio said hate crimes do not belong in the city.

The flyers were sealed in plastic bags with kernels of corn and left in more than 100 different yards.

"They are racially inappropriate," Engolio said. "Statistics on the back of the page about white crime versus Black crime, the statistics are completely skewed. They're fake."

The Southern Poverty Law Center designates White Lives Matter as a hate group and an extremist group that promotes neo-Nazi ideologies.

"I'm hoping it's someone from out of town doing this because anybody from Plaquemine has got to be an idiot to try and pull this off," Engolio said.

Engolio said the investigation is underway and the department is developing suspects with license plate readers and camera footage.

"We'll be discussing with the District Attorney's office. [The charges] will be somewhere between littering and terrorism," Engolio said. "You're not going to come down here and do this kind of stuff. It's not happening."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Plaquemine Police Department at 225-687-9273.
