NEW ORLEANS - Fire officials in New Orleans say a 1-year-old child is dead after becoming trapped inside a burning house.

The fire was reported just before 5:30 a.m. Monday on the 8800 block of Birch Street. New Orleans Fire Department Deputy Superintendent Roman Nelson said the home was completely destroyed and flames spread to the houses next door on either side.

Nola.com | The Times Picayune reports smoke alarms woke a woman inside the house where the fire started. She escaped, but Nelson said the flames spread so quickly that no one could reach the trapped child.

Fire officials said all occupants fled safely from the adjacent homes, which suffered significant fire damage. The home in which the child died was completely destroyed.

Nelson said two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries and two others were treated for dehydration.
