BATON ROUGE - Westbound I-10 closed at the Essen exit Wednesday morning as authorities escorted an ambulance to the airport. The ambulance was transporting injured sheriff's deputy Nick Tullier to the airport where he will fly to a rehabilitation hospital in Texas.

The move to Texas is welcomed good news for the Tullier family who told WBRZ previously, Tullier would be transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston when his condition was stable enough for such a move across the coast.

The hospital is ranked second in the nation. Tullier's father, James, said they selected TIRR after discussing options with the president and vice president's doctors. Both President Obama and Vice President Biden have shared medical information with the Tullier family after meeting the family on separate visits to Baton Rouge.

Tullier was one of the heroes injured in the Baton Rouge officer ambush in July.  Three officers died in the line of duty.  Tullier is the last injured lawman to remain in the hospital.

Tullier arrived in Houston just before 12 p.m. Wednesday

In an odd turn of events, as the ambulance was leaving the hospital in Baton Rouge headed to the airport road, police were dispatched to a report of a person showing up at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital having been shot at another location.  Simultaneously, state traffic monitors alerted drivers that I-10 at the exit to the hospital was closed due to police activity.  The two events were unrelated, just oddly timed.
