BATON ROUGE – Police say a Baton Rouge mother was arrested Thursday morning after receiving reports that she tried to kill her 8-year-old son.

Gloria Ross, 40, was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for attempted first degree murder and second degree cruelty to a juvenile. Ross' bond has been set at $200,000.

Shortly before 7 p.m., police were dispatched to an apartment on Mission Drive after a neighbor called saying that Ross' son had a cut across his throat. The victim told the neighbor that his mother had cut him with a serrated kitchen knife.

According to arrest documents, the officer observed a 2-2.5 inch cut across the victim's throat.

According to BRPD, Ross was reported saying, “Jesus told her to kill her son.”

Another witness inside the apartment said she heard the victim screaming and found Ross holding the knife. The witness then took the knife and ran to another neighbor's apartment for safety. 

The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
