Dozens of law enforcement officers from across the state are protecting the streets of Baton Rouge after being sworn in during the week.

Officers from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office and Baton Rouge Police Department have been working long hours following the death of Alton Sterling, making sure protests remained peaceful.  Sunday, six officers were shot, three killed, after a shooter from Missouri opened fire on Airline Highway.

Detective Captain Jeffrey Miller from the Ponchatoula City Police Department has been riding with a Baton Rouge police officer for two days.

"Some of them haven't been off in several days," Miller said. "So we decided that it would be good to help them out and ride along with them, and give them as much support as we can."

Miller says though he is new to being with these officers and in the area, he understands what they're going through.

"I haven't been through anything like it," Miller acknowledged, "but I can sympathize with what they're going through. Long days, no days off, I can sympathize with that."

"It's a lot that I'm learning here and definitely will take back to my department," Miller said.

More officers will be sworn in Friday and Saturday.
