NAPOLEONVILLE - An Assumption Parish inmate who escaped from the detention facility on Wednesday was captured on Thursday.

Officials say 39-year-old Calvin Weatherford was captured at a private boat launch at a subdivision in Jareau.

Weatherford escaped around 3 a.m. on Wednesday by scaling a razor-wire security fence. He was being held on two counts of residential burglary and probation. The Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office says information from public made Weatherford's capture possible.

The sheriff's office learned that Weatherford was at a relative's home in Erwinville and then traveled to his father's home in Jarreau.
Law enforcement closed in on the home, however Weatherford ran and jumped into Bayou Chanel.

A deputy was able to reach Weatherford and was arrested. He will be booked as a fugitive in Pointe Coupee Jail and then will be transported to Assumption Parish to face charges of escape and stealing a vehicle. The vehicle was stolen near LA 70 and was recovered without any damage. It will be returned to its owner.

Weatherford will also face attempted burglary and criminal damage to property charges resulting from another vehicle burglary and attempted vehicle burglary of a third vehicle.

The Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office says an internal investigation is underway at the jail and once it is discovered exactly how Weatherford was able to successfully escape, "necessary adjustments" will be made.

According to the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office, Weatherford was apparently not injured after scaling the fence and it is believed he used something to throw over the top of the razor-wire fence.
