DSNAP distribution begins in Livingston
LIVINGSTON – The distribution of disaster-related food stamps, known as DSNAP, began on Monday in Livingston Parish.
Eight parishes are currently distributing the emergency food assistance and will expand to additional parishes in the coming weeks, with East Baton Rouge starting next Monday.
There were two locations open in Livingston Parish, one of them being the Judson Baptist Church. Law enforcement had to temporarily turn people away because the church parking lot was full before the doors even opened.
Lois Aucion was just one of hundreds of people who showed in need of assistance.
"I mean I just don't got no food. I got to still feed," Aucion said.
She said that she ran out of food while cooking for loved ones.
"Family, my sister, my brother, my mom and dad," Aucion said.
Applicants that were helped today were those with last names began with letters A through D. The schedule will get through the rest of the alphabet later on in the week.
"There will be people here that have never had food stamps before, but right now it's a big help," Pastor David Lane, of Judson Baptist Church, said.
Pastor Lane's church has been a centerpiece for the community during the flooding. First as a shelter, serving food to residents and now as one of the staging points for DCFS to hand out food stamps to those eligible.
"People can't cook in their homes, all their food has been destroyed by the flood, they threw their fridges out," Lane said.
The process on Monday for those who showed up early took about two hours.
The schedule to register for DSNAP can be found here.
