Pat Shingleton: "Sledding and the Bon Fire..."

We are six days into Winter as sections of the country have experienced snowstorms and rough, wintry weather is expected tonight in the Midwest. A "Western Pennsylvania Storm" would shutdown school and once we fulfilled the directive of clearing walks and driveways, it was sled-riding time. Windover Avenue was the starting point of the sledding trail, taking us over Longview Drive, across Aunt Mae's front yard, to the woods below. By sanding the rust from the rails of your Radio Flyer from the previous winter, the trip was slicker. An additional coating of paraffin slicked the skids even more. The ride down was exhilarating but going back was quite a task, especially when Mom had us bundled so much we couldn't move. At the bottom was a bonfire with apples and potatoes, wrapped in foil, tucked into the coals.
