ST. GABRIEL- Iberville Parish President Mitch Ourso isn't sure how long repairs will take on Alligator Bayou Road south of Baton Rouge. Iberville and Ascension Parishes made five flood relief cuts in it during the August floods.

"If we didn't make the road cuts then I'm scared to say this water would still be in and around our neighborhoods," said Ourso Monday.

Rushing water cased serious structural damage to a 2000 foot stretch of the road. Asphalt and parts of the foundation were all washed away during the flood.

Ourso said Iberville has to work with Ascension Parish and FEMA to reopen Alligator Bayou.

"Can you imagine someone coming through this road at night going 40 or 50 miles per hour?" asked Ourso. "They'd go off in the bayou and I can't let someone get hurt."

Two months since the flood, residents who live along the rural road are getting anxious about its restoration, as are motorists who use it as a cut through between Gonzales and south Baton Rouge. However Ourso said it's not a simple repair job.

"I know it's an inconvenience to some but the most important thing here is the safety for our people," said Ourso.
