Newcomer to rowing
BATON ROUGE - Rachel Newcomer signed a scholarship to row crew at Temple University last week: she won't let little details like the fact that she's never been in a boat bother her.
Newcomer was an aspiring softball player who had earned division 2 scholarships to play in college, but her goal was division 1, and she found the opportunity in crew.
Newcomer got her big break when she posted a score of her row machine workout to her softball website: within days, she had several scholarship offers from coaches who were impressed by her split.
"She was so proud when she put it on her website for her recruiting," says Rachel's trainer Mike Babin. "She had no idea where it was going to end up."
Newcomer says even though she hasn't spent any time on the water, she's excited to see her hard work in the gym pay off on the water.
