LPSO: mother killed 8-year-old daughter then tried to kill herself
WALKER - Deputies in Livingston Parish say an 8-year-old girl is dead Sunday after she was found unconscious with wounds to her throat at her Walker home.
According to Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies arrived at the scene on Gaylord Road around 9 a.m. Sunday and and found firefighters performing CPR on 8-year-old Ariana Courtney. Investigators learned that the girl had deep lacerations on her throat area.
In a statement released Sunday, Sheriff Jason Ard said information at the scene revealed that the girls mother, 30-year-old Christine Courtney, had caused the wounds to her daughter's throat. Courtney also had self inflicted wounds on her own throat.
Ard said Courtney had to be restrained at the scene after she stated that different people were telling her to kill herself and her child.
The Livingston Parish Coroner's Office pronounced the girl dead at the scene. Courtney was airlifted to a Baton Rouge hospital where she is undergoing surgery on the self inflicted wounds.
Ard said a warrant has been issued for Courney's arrest for first-degree murder.
"At this time, it does not appear that this incident is tied to the flooding event we are currently experiencing," Ard said.
