BATON ROUGE - Police are closing in on a suspect who stole 2 trombones from an LSU band member, although the student has done some pretty handy detective work on his own.

Since we told you about this story last Friday night at 10 p.m., Thomas McKee has gotten one of his trombones back and gathered evidence that he says proves who stole it.

"I was really unsure of how I was going to track him down in the first place," he told News 2's Brett Buffington. "All my friends and music acquaintances told me the best place you can start is a pawn shop."

He didn't have to shop for leads very long. A tip took McKee to a Baton Rouge music store, where a man was caught on surveillance video trying to pawn two trombones valued at $8,000 for a quick hundred bucks.

With that picture in hand, McKee began asking around. He also turned that information over to BRPD, but says he found out the person who took his trombones is a friend of a friend, who actually brought one of the stolen instruments back to him.

McKee hopes to get the other instrument back soon, and says he's been in shock by the support he's gotten from the music community.

"There are a couple of people who've messaged me directly saying 'hey if you need a trombone that you can borrow or anything, please let me help out,'" McKee says.

When News 2 spoke to BRPD Wednesday night, they told us that they were working on arrest warrants for the person who is behind the thefts. They wouldn't confirm if it is the same person in the photos McKee provided until the warrant is signed.
