District hopes to sell voters on tax renewal for school building spree
DONALDSONVILLE - Voters in Ascension Parish will be asked to extend a tax to fund a huge school building spree.
The tax would generate about $120 million. Officials hope to sell it by explaining it is not a new tax, but a continuation of one that is already on the books - effectively, a tax renewal.
"For the average homeowner, there would be no change," Jackie Tisdell the school system spokesperson said in an interview with WBRZ News 2 Tuesday. "This is an extension of a {tax} that has been in existence in Ascension Parish for many years."
District executives would build three elementary schools and a middle school if taxpayers approve the measure.
First, though, it must be approved by the bond commission.
The renewal is expected to be on a ballot in April.
