Baton Rouge woman realized she won $1M Powerball drawing after reading Facebook post
BATON ROUGE - A Baton Rouge woman said she had no idea she won a $1 million Powerball prize until an out-of-state relative tagged her in a news article on Facebook.
The Louisiana Lottery Corporation announced Monday that a Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold in East Baton Rouge. The winning ticket from Saturday night's drawing was purchased at the Charge Up 47 on Coursey Boulevard.
On Thursday, the organization revealed that Lala Singleton had claimed the prize. Singleton told the Louisiana Lottery she only buys a ticket "every once in a while" and is usually in no rush to check her numbers. But that changed when her cousin in Connecticut tagged her in a news article saying the $1M ticket was bought in Baton Rouge.
Singleton said she "flipped out" when she realized she won. She will take home about $710,000 after taxes, and she plans to use that to help pay off debts and contribute to her kids' college fund.
“It’s been a stressful year,” Singleton said. “It has just been one thing after another lately… but joy comes in the morning!”
