Teen arrested on murder charges after armed robbery of vape pens at apartment complex

BATON ROUGE — A 16-year-old was arrested following a fatal shooting that was spurred by the armed robbery of vape pens at a Coursey Boulevard apartment complex.

East Baton Rouge Parish deputies said that 19-year-old Darby Marmillion was shot on April 2 at the City Heights Apartments after she met with the 16-year-old suspect she arranged to sell vape pens to.

The teen boy met Marmillion at the apartment complex, got into her car, and pulled a handgun on her during their transaction. The teen then robbed her of the vape pens at gunpoint and shot her before leaving the area.

Marmillion was taken to the hospital but died from her injuries the next day.

On Monday, the teen boy was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile, and obstruction of justice. He was booked into the Juvenile Detention Facility.

His arrest makes him the 4th teen arrested within 24 hours of three other teens who were arrested for a shooting on Easter Sunday.

"I think it's pitiful, but it's not a new phenomenon; we've always had this problem of younger people with guns shooting at one another. I think a lot of it is mimicking the wrong people." Pastor Errol Domingue told WBRZ, referring to multiple juveniles being arrested.

Domingue has pastored at Elm Grove Baptist Church for more than 20 years. Domingue says too many youth turn to violence instead of finding a less violent resolution. He wants the youth to know that one wrong decision can impact multiple lives.

"It's not worth it, throwing your life away, hurting your family, harming your mother, tearing up another family, it is just not worth it," he said.

"Your gun should not even be the answer to anything; we have to learn to work with one another, to build with one another and not destroy one another," he said.
