Ascension Parish residents fed up with trash collection issues
PRAIRIEVILLE - Residents in Ascension Parish have a serious trash problems these days: it's taking weeks before their garbage is getting picked up.
Waste Pro and Republic Services are the two major trash companies that service Ascension Parish.
"The service has just gone to be horrible," Fred Deville told News 2. Deville is a Prairieville resident who uses Waste Pro.
He says his trash hasn't been collected in two weeks, and his homeowners association says he can't leave trash cans on the curb for more than twenty-four hours.
"You're pulling trash off the curb, bringing it back into your garage and then recycling," he said. "It's horrible."
One councilwoman is working on a solution to clean up the mess.
"Our parish has grown. People deserve quality garbage service," Parish Councilwoman Teri Casso said.
Casso tried to get a parish-wide trash collection ordinance years ago, but failed. Another ordinance is in the works.
"We are hopeful that we can get an ordinance passed that just simply requires people to have garbage service," Casso added.
Right now, residents in unincorporated areas of the parish are not required to have their trash picked up.
Councilwoman Casso would also like HOAs to get involved with trash collection by putting that service up for bid and having only one company provide trash collection for their entire subdivision.
The councilwoman's plans are still in the works, and can't say when action will be taken to stop trash from piling up. The proposed parish-wide trash ordinance for Ascension is being reviewed by the parish's legal department.
