Police chase ends with fatal, fiery crash on I-10 in construction zone; 3 workers hurt
LAFAYETTE - On Wednesday evening, a police chase that began in Iberville Parish led to a fiery crash on I-10 West that shut down the interstate near Lafayette's Louisiana Avenue.
It all began when Iberville Parish deputies spotted a stolen Dodge Charger out of New Orleans around 8:30 p.m. that was headed toward Lafayette.
Louisiana State Police assisted with the pursuit, using spike strips to slow the stolen vehicle.
Authorities say the vehicle then entered a construction zone and crashed into a road maintenance truck.
The crash engulfed both vehicles in flames and state police said three contract workers who were inside the truck at the time were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities are still unable to identify the driver who caused the wreck as of Thursday morning due to the severity of the crash.
The interstate was re-opened at Louisiana Avenue early Thursday morning shortly after 4 a.m.
Prior to this, traffic had been diverted from I-10 to Exit 109 (Breaux Bridge). Drivers were also able to exit at Lobdell (LA 415) to US 190 to get around those delays.
