I'm not certain if this method is utilized today.  With the proliferation of subdivisions, lot selection appears to be determined more from an aesthetic desire. Years ago, when a lot was selected, the foundation and positioning of the house was determined by the prevailing wind. My grandfather stationed our Pennsylvania home in relationship to the prevailing north wind. Built in the early 1900s, his house had the front door facing west and the back door facing east. The north and south sides bore the brunt of the strong seasonal winds and related storms.  Prevailing winds are winds that blow predominantly from a single general direction over a particular point on the Earth's surface. The prevailing winds in our area lean more to a south, southeast and southwest origination and shift to a northwest push during the winter months. Roof experts recommend a roof cap away from the prevailing winds. Land falling tropical storms and hurricanes pose the worst threat for our area and usually compliment winds originating from the southeast, south and southwest. We may experience strong winds Monday and Tuesday of next week with the expected storms, Laura and Marco.
