State Police news conference on shooting
MARKSVILLE – Two of four city marshals involved in a deadly shooting where a six-year-old died were booked into jail Friday night.
Derrick Stafford and Norris Greenhouse were charged with murder and attempted murder for the shooting death of Jeremy Mardis and the shooting and injury of his father, Chris Few. Both men work part time for the Ward 2 Marshal in Marksville and portions of Avoyelles Parish.
Stafford and Greenhouse were with two other part time marshals when the shooting happened Tuesday. Authorities have said Few took them on a chase when they tried to serve a warrant. The shooting happened when Few tried to back down a dead end street toward marshals. The marshals opened fire. Few and his son were shot. Few survived and is recovering at a hospital.
"This is a very tragic time," Col. Mike Edmonson of the State Police said at a news conference late Friday. "Nothing is more important than the integrity of this badge. Tonight, the badge has been tarnished by these two individuals," Edmonson continued.
"Jeremy Mardis... didn't deserve to die," he said.
Edmonson said the part time marshals were arrested after reviewing 911 recordings and body camera video. Edmonson would not reveal the nature of the footage, calling it the worst video he has ever seen.
"It is the most disturbing thing I've seen. I'll leave it at that."
Stafford works full time for the Marksville Police Department. Greenhouse works full time for the Alexandria City Marshal.
State Police investigators have said they had yet to locate any warrant and that Few was unarmed.
The marshals work for Ward 2 Marshal Floyd Voinche, an elected official. Voinche issued a statement about the situation Friday but has avoided all other requests for comment.
Earlier this week, the WBRZ Investigative Unit uncovered city leaders in Marksville asked the Attorney General to decide if Voinche may have been operating inappropriately unrelated to the shooting.
