Dr. Mindy Calandro on brain-eating amoeba

BATON ROUGE- Health officials recently identified a brain-eating amoeba in Ascension Parish’s water supply. Now, a lot of Louisiana residents are wondering how it’s going to affect them.

This morning, Dr. Mindy Calandro from the Baton Rouge Clinic stopped by 2une In to give us more information on the water situation.

The water is safe to drink but there are still some extra precautions Ascension Parish residents should take. When taking a shower, make sure to run the water for five minutes before getting in. You should also be very careful not to get any water up your nose.

If you’re planning on going to a pool make sure you’re entering the water slowly so you don’t make a huge splash. Dr. Calandro says parents should keep their kids away from sprinklers and water toys like slip-n-slides, because they could contain contaminated water.
