Contractor's mishap means more construction on west side
ERWINVILLE - A contractor will pay for mistakes made after imperfections were found along Highway 413 that runs through West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee Parishes.
Driving down Highway 413, you may notice hundreds of white circles from Department of Transportation and Development inspectors marking the imperfections. Coastal Bridge Company recently laid asphalt along the nine-mile stretch that runs from Rosedale Road to Highway 416, but DOTD says the contractor had problems with its asphalt mixture.
"I think it was a rush job. They should have took the time to do a better job with mixing the asphalt being laid prior to being laid, but I think it was kind of rushed," Guy Purpera, who lives on the highway, says.
Now the contractor will need to fix the imperfections out of pocket, meaning more construction for people who drive on Highway 413.
"In some places they will have to cut out and refill. Other places they'll have to bore out some of the material," DOTD spokesman Rodney Mallett said. "So whatever they're going to have to do to meet the specifications of the contract, that's what they're going to do."
Mallett says it's good that DOTD spotted the imperfections before the faults could become a lingering problem. There's no timetable on how long repairs will take. The original project was slated to be complete by the beginning of 2017 and cost a little more than $11 million.
