WALKER - The city of Walker in Livingston Parish is shelling out cash to improve its water system.

The city has already spent $1.6 million on a new water tower, and now the city will spend another $1 million to build a water well. Both the tower and well will go toward preparing Walker for its future.

"It's going to be better for just the everyday user, better for fire protection purposes, it's going to be better for new businesses that are looking to come to town that we actually have the capacity and room for their growth," said Jamie Etheridge of the Walker Water Department.

The new 500,000 water tower sits behind the Our Lady of the Lake Hospital near I-12. The new water well will go in the same area to bring the output of water to 1.5 million gallons per day for Walker. The improvements are made possible by utility rate increases for Walker residents over the past few years.

"I think it's important for customers to see that the money they're spending is going towards real tangible things," said Etheridge. "They can look in the skyline in Walker and see a new water tower. Their money is being spent wisely."

Construction on the new well is expected to begin in January and finish around next fall.
