High expectations going into LSU vs Florida
BATON ROUGE - It's been an eventful week for No. 6 LSU and No. 8 Florida, and is stacking up to be an even-more eventful weekend.
LSU is coming off an unexpected home game after they hosted South Carolina due to flooding in that state. While crowds were much thinner than usual people still donated $40,000 for flood relief.
Running back Leonard Fournette's name has been everywhere, starting with a Sports Illustrated cover and continuing with his strong Heisman chances according to Vegas oddsmakers. Speculation also continued to dog the standout rusher that he should stop playing to avoid injury and hurting the chances at the NFL Draft, which he's not eligible for until 2017.
LSU could also see senior safety Jalen Mills return to the field against Florida. Mills has been out all season after an ankle injury at fall camp, but practiced all this week and dressed out against Carolina. Mills' experience on the field could give another edge to the Tigers secondary.
Florida is dealing with the suspension of rising star quarterback Will Grier after a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs. Backup Treon Harris will be on the field instead for the near future. He racked up 269 yards in the air with two touchdowns and 63 yards in rushing before Grier took over for the Tennessee game, which Harris had been suspended from after violating team rules.
Florida also said they're preparing to swarm Fournette if he gets anywhere near the ball, pitting their strong defense against the hard-charging rusher. Fournette has been the fastest rusher to reach 1,000 yards in the SEC's history, doing so in just five games, but Florida's experienced D-line has averaged less than 100 yards allowed per game this season and picked up 21 sacks.
It's an immovable object versus an unstoppable force. It's two undefeated teams doing battle with near-perfect conditions in the forecast.
Most importantly for Tiger fans, it's a night game in Death Valley.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN.
