BATON ROUGE - Police say a gun left just feet away from a dying man helped identify an 18-year-old as his killer.

According to BRPD, 39-year-old Julius Williams was found with multiple gunshot wounds on McCalop Street near Terrace Avenue around 4:30 a.m. Jan. 24. The street runs between the I-10 overpass and McKinley Middle School.

A .38 handgun containing several spent rounds matching the bullets that struck Williams was found several feet away, according to police.

Williams was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead later that same day.

The alleged gunman, 18-year-old Cornelius Calloway, was arrested Thursday.

According to witness testimony, Calloway had emerged from an upstairs apartment at a Terrace Avenue apartment building and confronted Williams in the parking lot before shooting him.

Investigators searched an apartment at the complex listed as his previous address, but found no evidence. Another search at his current apartment on North Ardenwood Drive uncovered .38 revolver ammunition and clothes that matched a description of him from the night of the shooting.

DNA evidence found on the handgun was later confirmed to be a match for Calloway as well.

Calloway was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of second-degree murder.
